A new report by Population Connection Action Fund assigns a failing grade to every Republican in the House and Senate for their refusal to vote in favor of reproductive rights.
The 2022 Congressional Report Card provides a snapshot of how all members of Congress voted on important bills concerning reproductive health and rights.
Notable bills include the Women’s Health Protection Act (WHPA), which would create a federal statutory right to abortion throughout the United States and prevent state governments from imposing onerous and unnecessary barriers to abortion care. The House has passed it twice, in 2021 and again in 2022. Appallingly, WHPA was defeated twice in the Senate this year.
The House also passed the Right to Contraception Act, which would federally enshrine the right to obtain and use contraception and prevent states from imposing limits or restrictions on access. All 220 House Democrats and only 8 Republicans voted in favor of the legislation. In the Senate, Republicans blocked a unanimous consent request to pass the bill.
Representatives and senators who voted in favor of Population Connection Action Fund’s position more than 90% of the time received an A, while those who voted in favor of Population Connection Action Fund’s position less than 60% of the time received an F.
Population Connection Action Fund Senior Vice President for Governmental and Political Affairs, Brian Dixon, says:
“It’s notable that no Republican in either the House or the Senate received a grade above an F. This report card highlights the need to elect more progressive leaders to Congress so that we can pass increased funding for international family planning programs and help ensure people in the U.S. and around the world can access safe abortion services.
“November’s election is particularly important in light of the Supreme Court’s draconian decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, which eliminated the constitutional right to abortion. We hope this report card will be a useful resource for voters concerned about women’s and reproductive rights.”
